Overview and Objectives

India is one of the fastest growing economies in the World, and the manufacturing sector will play an ever-increasing role in sustaining this growth. Indeed, this realization forms the core of the recently launched Make in India initiative. Within the manufacturing sector, primary processing of materials, and especially the winning of metallic and functional materials from their ores and minerals, is a major component which has already shown a great deal of growth in recent years, and has the potential for continued rapid growth in the next decade and beyond. In the case of steel, for example, India’s production capability is projected to grow by a factor of three in the next decade to about 200 million tonnes. Achieving the country’s ambitions in producing steel, as well as other metals and materials, will require well-trained scientists and engineers; this course, to be led by an internationally recognized leader in process metallurgy, is an ideal vehicle for such training.

This course is based on the realization that it is high time that the scope and perspectives of “Process Metallurgy” be widened to “Materials Process Science and Engineering”. Thus, the course will focus on the new directions in processing of both conventional as well as functional materials essentially based on pyroprocesses. Its coverage will encompass a wide range of topics that span right from scientific fundamentals to industrial production and plant practices. While it will deal with pyrometallurgy (with a bias towards ferrous process metallurgy – from raw material handling to steel refining), the course is designed with the broader aim of integrating Materials Process Science with Materials Science demonstrating their interlinking and mutual dependency.

Teaching Faculty

The course will be led by Professor Seshadri Seetharaman, Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden. Prof. Seetharaman is one of the world’s leading authorities in the field of Process Metallurgy. His research interests span traditional topics in process metallurgy, as well as in the areas of novel and innovative process solutions towards energy and environmental optimization of high temperature processes for steelmaking and waste management, and new approaches to bulk production of nanoalloys and composites. His 10 patents range from dephosphorization in steels, to modifying EAF process for increased molybdenum reduction in alloy steels, to novel methods of extraction of vanadium and rare earth metals.

With over four decades of teaching, research, and scholarship, Prof. Seetharaman has been the thesis adviser and guide to over 30 PhD graduates, and has published over 350 papers, in addition to co-authoring a book chapter (with Prof. K.P. Abraham) on the “Thermodynamic Properties of Oxide Systems” (1980), he has edited several books. The recent book, “Treatise on Process Metallurgy” (2013), of which he is the Editor-in-Chief, has the most comprehensive and up-to-date treatment with contributions from many stalwarts in the field, including several from India.

Recipient of many awards and honors from all across the world, Prof. Seetharaman is an acknowledged leader on an international scale, and has been a visiting professor in leading universities in many countries, including India. His awards include an Honorary Doctorate from Aalto University (formerly Helsinki Institute of Technology, Finland) and a Distinguished Alumnus Award of the Indian Institute of Science. He is also the recipient of the Best Teacher award many times in the last three decades.

His strong and deep ties to India (through research collaborations, as well as former students who are serving Indian academia, R&D labs and industry), he is a regular visitor to the country; he has spent several stints in recent years as a Visiting Professor / Distinguished Visiting Professor at IISc, IIT-B, IIT-K and IIT-M.

For this course, Prof. Seetharaman, will be taking the help of Professor Govind Gupta and Prof. S. Subramanian (both from IISc, Bangalore), and Professor Nurni N. Viswanathan (Centre of Excellence in Steel Technology, IIT-Bombay). Eminent lecturers from industry and academia will be invited to give specific lectures in their areas of expertise.
