NRC-M Summer Workshop on Structural Characterization Techniques in Materials Science

29 June - 17 July 2009
UGC Networking Resource Centre for Materials
Department of Materials Engineering
Indian Institute of Science
Bangalore 560 012.

About the Workshop

Updates

21 May 2009
Tentative program is now available.

The workshop will be divided approximately equally between classroom lectures and laboratory in the fields of optical microscopy, crystallography, x-ray diffraction methods, scanning electron microscopy and associated techniques and scanning probe microscopy along with case studies on characterization and failure analysis. Lecturers will be drawn from the faculty of IISc, IITs and government R&D laboratories. A set of course notes will be provided to participants.

Important Note: Given the hands-on nature of the Workshop, the number of participants will be limited to 20.

Who should attend

This workshop is intended for senior research students, postdoctoral fellows and young faculty members from eligible partner institutions in the NRC-M programme. From within this group, priority will be given to departments that have already initiated collaborative programs under NRC-M with IISc.

Topics

  1. X-ray diffraction (Refresher on basic crystallography and diffraction, Quantitative phase analysis, Stress measurement, Rietveld analysis, Texture determination)
  2. Scanning electron microscopy and microanalysis (imaging, energy and wavelength dispersive spectroscopy, electron backscattering diffraction)
  3. Scanning probe microscopy
  4. Optical microscopy (bright / dark field, phase contrast / Nomarski/ polarized light, confocal microscopy, fluorescence microscopy

Each module will cover approxiamtely 4 days divided equally between lectures and hands-on training / demonstrations on the various experimental techniques.

Cost

There is no registration fee. Accommodation will be made available while TA and DA will be borne by NRC-M.
