Dr. P.C. Ramamurthy (IISc) and Dr. Pathik Kumbhakar (Department of Physics, NIT-Durgapur) are the principal investigators in the project on Synthesis and Study of Optical Properties of Semiconductor Nanoparticle-Polymer Nanocomposites.
NRC-M organized the NRC-M Summer Workshop on Structural Characterization Techniques in Materials Science. It featured lectures, case studies, live demonstrations, and hands-on training on characterization techniques that play a vital role in materials research: optical microscopy, x-ray diffraction methods, scanning electron microscopy, and scanning probe microscopy. It attracted a participation of 20 faculty members and research scholars from across the country.
NRC-M sanctions its seventh collaborative project.
Prof. S. Subramanian (IISc), Dr. N. Ramesh Babu and Prof. V. Muthupandi (NIT-T, Tiruchirappalli) are the principal investigators of the project entitled Development of Bioactive and Antibacterial Nanocrystalline Hydroxyapatite Coatings on Ti and Ti-Alloy Implant Materials by Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation Technique.
NRC-M organized the Workshop on Microstructural Engineering. Featuring 25 invited lectures and 10 contributed lectures, the Workshop attracted nearly 60 participants. The lectures covered a wide range of topics in microstructures, their evolution and their effect on properties. The topics included microstructural measures, microstructures in steels, Al-, Mg- and Ti-alloys, textures and their control, and microstructures and stresses in thin films.
Professor Vikram Jayaram visited NIT-Rourkela (May 5,6), and delivered a lecture in the Department of Ceramic Engineering on Non-equilibrium glasses and molecular densification in alumina based ceramics.

Dr. S. Karthikeyan (IISc), Dr. Aloke Paul (IISc) and Dr. K. Siva Prasad (NIT-T, Tiruchirappalli) are the principal investigators of the project entitled Microstructure and High Strain Rate Properties of Metal-Intermetallic Laminates Produced by Diffusion Bonding.
Prof. Satyam Suwas visited NIT-Trichy. He gave the inuaugural lecture at the symposium METTLE-09 entitled Crystallographic Textures: State of the Art. This talk included a brief introduction to the Department of Materials Engineering and the NRC-M programme. He interacted with Prof. M. Chidambaram (Director, NIT-T), Prof. S. Natarajan (Chairman), Prof. T. Srinivasa Rao, Prof. Muthupandi, Dr. Ravishankar, Dr. Shivaprasad, Dr. Ramesh Babu, and Dr. S. Kumaran (partner in the collaborative project with Prof. Suwas).
NRC-M announces the Workshop on Microstructural Engineering, to be held in the Department of Materials Engineering at IISc during 25-30 May 2009. Prof. T. A. Abinandanan is the Convener.
NRC-M organized the Workshop on Computational Materials Science (CMS-09), which saw a participation of over 75 faculty members, research scholars and graduate students. The Workshop featured ten lectures covering a wide range of topics and techniques: ab inito, molecular dynamics, phase field methods, process modelling, genetic algorithms, and soft computing methods.
Prof. Praveen Ramamurthy visited the Departments of Physics and Chemistry at Sri Sathya Sai University, Puttabarthi, which plans to start a Masters program in Nanoscience later this year.
During his visit, Prof. Ramamurthy had discussions with Prof. K. Venkataramaniah, HoD, Dean, Faculty of Science, and Dr. S. Siva Sankara Sai, Reader. He also delivered a lecture entitled Organic nanoelectronics Issues and challenges on 28 February 2009.
Prof. S. Karthikeyan visited Bengal Engineering and Science University, Shibpur (BESUS). He gave a talk on the research activities of the Department of Materials Engineering at IISc; he interacted with faculty members in the Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (Prof. S. Chatterjee, Chairman, Prof. M.K. Banerjee, Prof. M. Ghosh) and in the School of Materials Science (Prof. N.R. Bandyopadhyay, Chairman) at BESUS, and explored collaborative possibilities.

Predeep, Professor& Head of the Department of Physics, Dr. Sony Varghese (Chemistry), Dr. G Unnikrishnan (Chemistry), Dr. Raghu Chatanathodi (Physics), Dr. Sujith Athiyanathil (Chemistry).

Bhojya Naik, Chairman, Dr. Venugopala Reddy, Dr. B. E Kumaraswamy, Dr.Yadav D Bodke and Dr. J. Keshavayya. He delivered a lecture entitled Organic Nanoelectronics: Issues and Challenges on 16th January 2009.
