The Metallurgical Society

13th Annual Symposium on
Metallurgical and Materials Research

7-8 October 1999

Message from the Organisers

No amount of studying in isolation can substitute for the understanding gained by discussion with learned ones, and no concept may be deemed to be understood if it cannot be put down in proper words. This symposium gives an opportunity to us, the students, to present our work before the faculty and fellow students and get newer insights from them. Also, this gives us an opportunity to define our research problem with greater clarity to ourselves. Furthermore, the symposium is helpful as an annual appraisal of the research being carried out in our department.
The contributions reflect the wide variety of research activities that are carried out in our department: study of novel processing and testing methods of metals, intermetallics, ceramics, composites and metastable materials; and modelling of systems right from atomic to macro level.
The Thirteenth Annual Symposium is unique because all aspects of the symposium are being taken care of by the students. We thank our Chairman for giving us the opportunity to learn about symposiuming by handling all the features that go with it.
Finally we would like to thank the Chairman, Division of Mechanical Sciences and the Chairman, Department of Metallurgy, for their constant encouragement and guidance. We would like to thank the faculty, staff and students of our department for their much needed assistance and suggestions in organising this symposium.
